Well Loved Instrument

The instrument is a product of a successful crowdfunding campaign Scott Onstott ran to bring his very special personal sacred geometry instrument to the world.

What is the Golden Ratio?

The golden ratio is a unique proportion which simultaneously patterns structures as small as DNA and as large as galaxies.
The golden ratio patterns very small (DNA) and very large structures (spiral galaxies). These images are from The Divine Proportion.
Scott has created handheld instruments called Proportioners to give backers the ability to discover the golden ratio in the world around themselves—and to use this tool to aid in designing their creations.

Due to its precise geometric design, the middle pointer always proportionally indicates the golden ratio with respect to the width of the caliper's outer arms.
The whole is to the larger segment in exactly the same "golden ratio" as the larger segment is to the smaller. The golden ratio (~1.618), symbolized by the Greek letter Phi (Φ), is a gateway to the study of sacred geometry.

The golden ratio is found in mathematics, geometry, music, philosophy, psychology, art, archaeology, architecture, geography, molecular biology, plant morphology, human physiology, physics and astronomy.

“The golden ratio is the key to universal physics.” -Sir Edward Appleton, Nobel Laureate in physics (1947)

The golden ratio isn't some rarefied or esoteric thing. It's used extensively in corporate logos and chances are you have golden rectangles on you right now.
The pentagram is replete with golden ratios; Proportioner shown atop 12.9" iPad (not included) running Euclidea: Sketches app from the Constructions course.
Credit cards are nearly perfect golden rectangles (98% correlation).
Scott Onstott's geometric analysis of the Mona Lisa started with a Proportioner.
Let no one who is not a mathematician read my works.” -Leonardo da Vinci
Scott wrote a book on Leonardo's hitherto unrecognized yet consistent use of the golden ratio in structuring his art:

"I believe that the reason Leonardo's art has lasting power is because it is structured on the divine proportion [golden ratio]. You don't have to know anything of what he called a very secret science to have his art move you. Seeing art structured on the divine proportion sets up a palpable resonance because the divine proportion is part of you." —Secrets In Plain Sight: Leonardo Da Vinci

The Proportioner

The instrument uses mechanical hinges for durability and is efficiently assembled. The Proportioner is sturdy in the shirt pocket or purse, and is accurate across its range of motion, especially at small opening sizes.

The Proportioner's operable range is from 1-5/8" to 1'2-3/4" (41-375mm).
Proportioners can be used to analyze anything from fine art to astrophysics.

Curious Aesthetic Therapy

Watching Proportioners open and close is magical and acts as curiously soothing aesthetic therapy while you are otherwise consumed with life's stresses.

The golden ratio is such a major key to "life, the universe and everything"—the icing on the cake is that both Proportioners not only help soothe the soul but they happily occupy fidgeting hands.

Proportioners make great classroom aids, "executive toys," stimulating conversation pieces, and superb gifts.

People who have Proportioners sometimes use them to discover amazing things on their computer screens and in the world around them!

Consider leaving the Proportioner on your desktop as a conversation piece or hang it on a hook on the wall to appreciate as a piece of art until your next use. If the mechanical hinges loosen over time, you can easily finger-tighten their wide slotted heads.

Shipping Notes

All Proportioners are sent inside padded envelopes and packaged within rigid cardboard boxes, which helps protect these instruments. They are sent via Canada Post's Small Packet Air service.

As the importer of record, you are responsible for any duties, taxes, or any other charges that your country chooses to impose for the import.

Delays in customs are to be expected and are beyond our control. That said, most receive their Proportioner(s) within about a week.

The Proportioner comes pre-assembled and is shipped ready to use, right out of the box.
Disclaimer: Proportioners are not toys for kids. Proportioners have pointy ends and arms that can be broken if misused.

Frequently asked questions

How do I order more than one?

Please send an email to scott@sacredgeometryacademy.com with the number you want and your mailing address.

Scott will reply by sending you an invoice through Paypal for the number you want including your specific volume discount, including shipping. The more you order the more you will save! Pay the invoice if you want to go ahead or ignore it if you do not. All items will be shipped in one box.

Teachers: Proportioners are fantastic classroom aids to get kids (and adults) interested in proportion, the golden ratio, geometry, math, and more.

What are Proportioners made of?

The arms are laser cut from a wood glued sandwich of high quality walnut veneer on both sides of a medium density fiberboard  (MDF) core.

Natural wood tends to warp, bow and twist, thus the need for MDF to give the tiny parts dimensional stability. I have tried laser cutting several species of natural wood in prototypes and its quality was unacceptable over time and with humidity. Beware of cheap knock offs of my design for this reason.

The hinges are made of two part aluminum threaded screw posts, which can be easily finger-tightened if they loosen in time.

How do I enter my mailing address?

If you are new to Sacred Geometry Academy, and do not already have an account, you will see address fields below in the payment area. Please fill these fields out with your order, including your country.

If you already have an account, then these fields are hidden below. Simply enter your address in your profile (under the Me > Profile menu and then click Edit after you log in) or just send an email with your address to scott@sacredgeometryacademy.com so I can send out your Proportioner ASAP.

Will I have to pay extra in my country?

Each country assesses customs and duties on goods imported from other countries. You are responsible for paying these fees. How much they might be varies so check with your country's postal service for more details.

Canadians do not have to pay any customs fees because I ship from my home in Canada. People in other countries report that sometimes they have to pay a small fee and other times do not because fees are typically up to individual customs agents to assess—each country is different.

Where is the tracking information?

All Proportioners are shipped without tracking because unfortunately that would add an additional $25 to the price, which seemed overly excessive to me.

Canada Post does not have the affordable tracking service those in the United States and some other countries have grown used to with certain private carriers.

I'm sorry that I do not have access to private carriers where I live, but quiet island life has certain advantages and inconveniences!
